Issai winter hardy kiwis thrive in areas as cold a zone 5, which includes much of New England, the upper Midwest and even Denver. Just choose a sunny location that's got fertile, well drained soil and is protected from the wind. These yummy 2" long fruits ripen in late summer and mature vines can bear up to 80 lbs. of fruit annually. Vines typically start bearing at a young age, usually just 2-3 years after planting. Issai kiwis are self fertile, however if you have a male kiwi growing nearby this tends increase fruit set.
