With parents that originated in South Africa you'd expect Crocosmia to be sensitive to cold, but surprisingly many types grow as happily in zone 5 (Illinois) as they do in zone 9 (Southern CA).
Their flower spikes, which can reach three feet in length, carry up to 50 individual tubular flowers. These begin opening from the bottom of the stem upwards, delivering cascades of red, orange and yellow blooms from mid summer and into fall.
Crocosmia plants are virtually pest- and disease-free. Add to that the ability of cut stems to last a week or more in a vase, and tendency for the plants to develop into sturdy clumps, and you've got an easy care, well-mannered, beautiful garden plant. Help yourself to some!
