Native to Mexico and Central America, achimenes are called by many common names including orchid panies, monkey-faced pansies, hot water plants, nut orchids, magic flowers, Cupid's bow and more. Whatever the name that's typically used in your region, experienced gardeners agree that these are carefree charmers.
Along with African violets and gloxinias, achimenes have been grow in solariums and greenhouses since the Victorian era. Still excellent choices for shady locations, hanging baskets and houseplants, these plants bloom in a number of bright colors and flower freely. If you haven't tried them, we encourage you to do so.
