Giant White Squill
Giant White Squill (Urginea maritime) has become one of our signature plants because of its huge (HUGE!) bulbs, relative obscurity, unique form and perfect suitability to warm weather gardens.
Over the seasons, these bulbs grow larger, baking in the sun and blooming without any special care. In November the bulbs produce lush leaves, wide and smooth. The foliage grows about 3 feet high and stays green until the warm weather of May prompts the bulbs to slip into dormancy, a sleepy state where they stay until late summer.
Then in August, the tall flower stalks magically appear, grow at the extraordinary rate of 2" to 3" per day and curl into curious twisted spires of tiny white blossoms. The bloom spikes that are cut for flower arrangements continue to grow another 6" to 8", changing daily and twisting into sensuous curves. (See above.)
The giant white squill plants grown for us in the desert, are never irrigated or protected from predators. It isn't necessary. In their native Mediterranean lands these plants naturalize in harsh, dry areas and the bulbs are used as the active ingredient in rodent poison.
With high "Wow" appeal, if you appreciate the unusual you'll love these!
