Fragrant Flowers
Fragrant Plants

You've told us how much you love fragrance and we've sought out a wide selection of cultivars that offer scent, from soft to intense. Peruse the notes below, then click on the flower photos to go see variety choices and more information.

Amaryllis
A handful of hard-to-find amaryllis cultivars are fragrant; look for those in the trumpet group if you're partial to the combination of stellar good looks and sweet scents.
Belladonna
Warm weather gardeners are well acquainted with belladonna lilies and have appreciated their rich perfume for generations; here's your chance to do the same.

Babiana
Wondering what to plant in dry, sunny sites that have less than perfect soil? Babiana adds color and scent with very little effort. Make sure to plant enough for cutting, too.
Daffodils
Many types of daffodils produce a soft, powdery scent in addition to cheery spring blooms. Check individual variety listings for notations about fragrance.

Freesia
Freesia's fragrance is legendary; as a cut flower, in perfumes, candles, room sprays, potpourris and more. Lighter colored blossoms usually produce the strongest scents.
Grape Hyacinths
With scents that tease the nose but don't overpower, grape hyacinths are among the few blue flowers with fragrance. Enjoy these in tiny early spring bouquets.

Hyacinth
Hyacinths produce some of the strongest, sweetest aromas found in spring gardens. For many gardeners the season just wouldn't be complete without the rich scent of hyacinths.
Bearded Iris
About a third of bearded irises have light to moderate fragrances; check the information provided with each variety to determine if your favorites offer beauty and the bonus of scent.

Dutch Iris
Most Dutch iris flowers produce a light, clean fragrance that is best appreciated as cut flowers. Tuck a trio of blooms into a small, slender vase that you place on a bedside table.
Lycoris
The pink variety of lychoris, or "surprise lilies", produce tall, dramatic flowers with a strong perfume. Grow in pots where not winter hardy or where protection from summer rains is needed.

Paperwhites
Virtually all paperwhites are scented; some deliver such heady scents that they can perfume even a large room. See cultivar details on our Paperwhite page.
Peonies
Peonies are garden royalty with big blooms, killer fragrance, and life spans of 50+ years.
